On copyright and licensing issues, anyone involved with the performing arts on the scholastic level can tell you that “copyright trolls” (lawyers buying rights to music and then charging catastrophically high fees to non-profit arts organizations) have been a bane to the creative (and pageantry!) arts. I'm all for artists getting paid for their work but when a scammy lawyer makes money off of artists and students alike? It's wrong. Earlier this month, one of these trolls in Arizona finally lost a copyright case. You can read about it here.
Further reading on copyright (because here it is, time to plan for marching season): FAQs on Copyright and Music Licensing from Halftime Magazine and a plethora of I nformation from the National Association for Music Educators (NAFME).
I want to give a special shout-out of congratulations to Meghan, Darren, and all the great performers, parents, and staff at Decatur Central Winter Guard, Indiana's Silver Medalists in Class A IHSCGA State Championships this year: the highest-placing winter guard in school history
And Congratulations to all the Indiana State Champions and Medalists for the 2017 Season: East Noble, Avon A, and Richmond in Regional A Class; to Carroll, Decatur Central, and Goshen Varsity in Class A; to the Open Class Medalists Homestead, Fishers, and Ben Davis; and to the World Class Top Three Carmel, Avon, and Center Grove.
Finally, Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps is still seeking contra/tuba members, so if you know a promising young musician who wants to compete this summer, well, you know…
For anyone coming to the WGI Winds and Percussion Power Regional in Kentucky this weekend, that's where I'll be. Listen for my dulcet tones (ahem) because I'm announcing.
If you're on Spring Break right now, safe and happy travels or stay-cations, as the case may be.
