The “Strength to Bear the Unbearable” News, 13 June 2016

“Service to others is the rent we pay for our room here on Earth.” Attributed to Muhammad Ali (and also Shirley Chisholm and Marian Wright Edelman, among others).

“We're thirteen trillion dollars in debt now. We spend six percent of our entire budget servicing the debt. Yeah, interest rates are low but…just paying interest on the money we owe takes up more spending than food stamps, the federal Department of Education, and the entire State Department combined.” Mike Pesca (Panoply, Slate, The Gist)

“I have been watching my new favorite show: Orange is not the New Black.” President Barack Obama, slow-jamming the news with Jimmy Fallon (NBC, PBS NewsHour)

“…we look at [Hillary Clinton] and say she's this very flawed candidate. But I've actually come to think it's the opposite, that Clinton [has] turned out to have a tremendous set of skills that are not the ones we typically know how to prize in American politics, but [her] inside game – the building of those relationships, creating all these massive coalitions – like, when you look at studies of female leadership, these traits are much more common in female leaders and these were extremely prominent in Clinton's [primary] campaign…I really think we underrate it…I think there's something that we've really underrated here about the degree to which the way we are used to campaigns being run selects for traits that are stereotypically male. And the way Clinton [has run has] worked but I think we, rather than being impressed by that, continue to sort of either dismiss it or scold her for that…” Ezra Klein (Panoply, Vox, The Weeds)

“…our brother Omar Mateen…carried out an attack on a nightclub for sodomites in the city of Orlando, Florida. He succeeded in massacring the filthy crusaders, killing and injuring more than one hundred of them before he was killed…May Allah accept our brother…” Islamic State Daily News Broadcast in English, reporting the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub on June 12. Mateen is reported to have claimed allegiance to ISIS but Mateen's father has been reported as saying Mateen was angry because he had recently seen two men kissing but that it was not his religious views that motivated him. Mateen's ex-wife has said she believes Mateen was mentally ill and that was the reason for his actions, and not religion. (NPR, WBUR, On Point with Tom Ashbrook; CNN)

“Say a prayer for them. Say a prayer for their families. God give them the strength to bear the unbearable.” President Barack Obama, speaking about the shooting victims in Orlando.

“When senseless acts of tragedy remind us / That nothing here is promised, not one day / … history remembers / We lived through times when hate and fear seemed stronger; / We rise and fall and light from dying embers, / remembrances that hope and love last longer / And love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love / cannot be killed or swept aside.” Lin-Manuel Miranda (2016 Tony Award; BBC; New York; Vogue)

Since 2000, median household income in the United States has declined seven percent, adjusted for inflation. (NPR, WAMU, The Diane Rehm Show)

Out of people who self-declare as interested in running for public office, forty-six percent of women agree with the statement “I know a lot about public policy issues,” compared to fifty-nine percent of males. (Panoply, Vox, The Weeds, Sarah Kliff, citing Brookings)
